How long can a newly qualified teacher do supply teaching before having to start their induction year?
From September 2012 a newly qualified teacher can work as a supply teacher for a total of 5 years before they have to start their induction year.
This used to be a period of 4 terms but NQTs could apply for an extension in extreme circumstances.
Due to the economic climate and a reduction in teaching vacancies available some newly qualified teachers were needing to supply teach longer than 4 terms. The DfE therefore decided to extend this to 5 years which gives NQTs plenty of time to find a school to settle down in and start their induction year.
Due to the increased time NQTs will no longer be able to apply for an extension
